How We Work as a Husband/Wife Team | Business

Photography is something I never pushed Nathan into, and never wanted to. I had an idea in my head since I first started my business to become a husband/wife photography team, but I knew if it happened it would happen organically - and not because I even asked him to. Almost two years ago at my first destination wedding in Charlottesville (at the Trump Winery, no less!) Nathan came with me for a mini weekend getaway and after second shooting one of the most perfect weddings ever, he was hooked.

Now Nathan is my second shooter at nearly every single wedding I photograph. He has his own day job but chooses to selflessly sacrifice his time on the weekends to make my dream into a reality. Not only that, but he also took a new role in my business since last fall - reviewing blog posts, making business plans and decisions, and even all the shooting and editing for my (our!) SEO Video Training.

When we get to weddings we completely fall in the groove and I wanted to share what that looks like! Here's how the day goes with my wonderful husband as the second photographer... (Note: All pictures in this blog except those of Nathan are ones that HE took! Be impressed!)

Our Richmond Vacation | Personal

Family time is absolutely the best thing for me. More than traveling the world, more than long weekends with nothing to do, and more than coffee with a good friend - though these are all things I love. But nothing sets my heart quite at peace like spending time with my family, and all the better when EVERYONE is there - which is hard to coordinate with so many people now!

A few weeks ago my Mom arranged a weekend for us in Richmond. Last year we vacationed with family in the Outer Banks but with busy schedules, new kids, and babies on the way, she planned a weekend excursion in Richmond instead. We went to a campground and had our own little cabin to stay in.

The first night we simply all showed up and spent time together. It's amazing how quickly our family has grown, so catching up with my favorite people is always a joy that takes hours and hours, never quite getting done! On Saturday we woke up to a full day together and my Dad continued the tradition of having a family devotion, something which I haven't always appreciated but have grown to love over the years...

Our Lady of Mount Carmel Wedding | Newport News Wedding Photographer | Brian + Liz

Oh there are SO many things that were beautiful about this wedding day that it's hard to know where to begin! Brian and Liz are absolutely surrounded by people who love them, both individually and as a couple. These high school sweethearts have been dating for 8 years and have a quiet, mature confidence in who they are together. It was an honor to witness both the wedding ceremony, which celebrated the true meaning of marriage, and the rest of the day as they finally became husband and wife.

Two years ago Liz lost her father at much too young of an age. She honored her father in so many ways, including a special bracelet with his signature on it (scroll down to see it!). Throughout the day the mother-daughter bond she shares with her mom radiated through, from laughing together while getting ready to the moment Liz walked down the aisle. I'll never forget her brother's speech at the reception as he spoke so highly of Brian and ended with, "In 2014 we lost a great man and in 2016 our family gained a great man." Tears flowed and hugs were shared as the family both remembered what was and looked forward to the future.
